What I Wore : On Rainy Days

When you live in a very dense place like Japan, especially in the cities and suburbs, most of us are pedestrians.  Yes, we do have a car, but when there is only one parking lot for the local post office (very luck there is even one), the super market and the pharmacy don't share a parking lot, you will most likely not be driving to go around these places.  AND especially if all three are within 10 minutes of walking distance from your house.
Just to give you a glimpse of how things are around here.
So, each household will have at least one umbrella for each family member, maybe the same amount of extras, and another set of the portable type.

Thankfully, rain boots have become very popular and stylish, and same goes for raincoats.  They are a must have for me, when I need to walk my two kids to where the pre-school bus stops.
On days when it's not raining too hard, I try to enjoy wearing my rain boots, although I always end up combining them with my black skinnies.

Apatite Rough Cut Nuggets

I've made simple 14K gold filled chain earrings with these beautiful apatite nuggets.
This bluish greenish stone has a soft lustrous shine to it,  making it a perfect piece for summer.
As I roll them over in my palm, I cannot but help feel the great power of nature to create such beauties.
They are listed in my Etsy shop!

Winked by a Ladybug

I usually don't take pictures of my food when I'm eating out, but I just couldn't resist this one today.

The yellow part tasted of passion fruits, and the inside was white chocolate moose.  Yum.
The calm atmosphere of the lounge cafe really brought out it's cuteness.

Taking in the city air, good (restaurant) food, and non-stop talking was all very refreshing.
But all because it's something only once in a while.
Something you call "refreshing" because you work hard everyday.

What I Wore : The Power of Accessories

An example of how a belt, colorful wedge sandals, and jewelry can really boost your one mile outfit.
This has been one of my favorites so far this season.  Have worn it twice already to have lunch with my girlfriends.

The T-shirt is self-made, a white version of the one I posted yesterday.
I love this slub jersey knit that I have not been able to find again in domestic stores so far.  I've seen T-shirts like these in select shops with ridiculous prices.

The skirt is Grandma made, one that I custom ordered when I was a university student.  I had worn a school uniform throughout middle and high school (which is normal both in public and private schools here) and had nothing to wear everyday.
I ended up not wearing this that much at that time, I guess it was too plain, but has recently become a regular member of the team.
The two tucks on the front and back make the silhouette not too tight, and the layered part in front gives it a bit of detail.

The necklace, I had bought in Rome when I had travelled there more than 10 years ago.  And I had not worn it once till now.  I have always loved the color, the design and all, but didn't know what to wear with it.  Like the necklace stood out too much and didn't blend in with my clothes.

I guess there is a right timing for everything to be worn.  Normally you grow out of the things you used to wear.  But sometimes you are the one needs to catch up to the the things you had bought.

Back Seam Black T-shirt

I know this is a rather dull sewing post, but you'll have to admit a black simple T-shirt is an essential item, especially when you have a lot of colorful skirts.

It's my third time making this pattern, the previous ones made in white and grey.
The silhouette is not too tight, not too loose, and makes you actually look skinnier.  And the bodice length is longer than store bought ones so you don't have to worry about it coming out of your skirts or your whole back showing when you bend down.
The silky smooth knit is a bit sheer, adding a dressy touch.

Sure you can get a plain T-shirt for a couple of dollars, but you will never get this kind of quality, not to mention the whole fun of making one!

milky white × silver
rose pink × bronze

The Swarovski Studs - three new colors

Another piece of jewelry I love making and playing with the colors are these Swarovski studs.  Such a simple design yet will definitely be an eye-catcher.  A piece you can wear to parties, and wedding occasions, or just with a T-shirt and jean style to boost up your everyday outfits.

I like the way the extra small seed beads wrap the crystals; I think it shows more of the shine than the rivoli stitch.

Hope you'll check them out in my Etsy shop!

The Stratum Hoops - three new colors

I added three new colors to these playful teardrop hoops, and remade another that was out of stock.
The design is very simple, which leaves room for the numerous combination of colors.

My mind wanders off to what I would wear with each one as I make them.

<作り方>

TUTORIAL: Hand-stenciled Placemats

<What you'll need>
Fabric for your placemat
Stencil design
Clear file
Pen type cutter knife
Thin tip permanent marker
Washi tape
Acrylic paint
Makeup sponge
Palette (or anything you can use to spread out your paint on)

<How to stencil your fabric>
1. Prepare your stencil design
2. Cut the clear file into a size suitable for your design (make sure you have enough space around the     design)
3. Use your permanent pen to copy the design onto your clear file
4. Cut out the design
5. Secure your stencil over the fabric using washi tape (2 or 3 places will be enough)
6. Let the sponge absorb some paint, then dab it over the stencil (try to fill in each hole with several dabs making the color darker each time)

<TIPS>
1. The paint will come out differently depending on your fabric.  Always try out on scraps before you start.
2. The color will fade when washed.  Keep that in mind when you decided the darkness of the color.  However, if you put on too much paint, the fabric will become stiff.
3. If you want to use part of a design, use masking tape to cover up the surrounding designs.
4. The paint will start to clog up on your stencil.  Use your masking tape to gently peel them off.

I'm sure there are more efficient gadgets out there to make stencils.  But this is something you can do on a low budget, with things you can get at your local store, or they may already be lying around your house!
I've done Freezer Paper stenciling in the past as well.  Compared to that, it is harder to cut out detailed designs since the clear file is thicker.  But the advantage is that it is easier to use for repeated patterns like the one I did, and you can use them over and over again.

I just had so much fun with this project!
The flower and leaf design I used is so versatile, my mind kept drifting off to new ideas while I was working on it.

Hope you liked my share!

Mint Green Pants

I made a pair of pants with mint green cotton fabric that I knew I was going to make pants out of when I saw them.
The pattern, "Quartz" from Tamanegi-kobo is described as tapered, fitting loosely around the hips and thighs, and a straight line to the hem.

I changed the hem from a double to a single so that I can fold them up, did not make the piping pockets because they were too hard for me (and I don't put stuff in my back pocket), and used a large snap button, instead of making button holes.

I found a striped fabric with the same shade of green from my stash of scraps, and used them for the pockets.
I selected pink, a color that will stand out for the inner bias part.  No one will see them, but it gives you that excitement when you wear them.

It was my second time putting on fly zips, which turned out quite nicely.

So I was satisfied with the sewing part of these pants.  But they were a bit tight around the hips and thighs.  Yes, I should have hand sewn the sides first to check out the size.

It's always difficult for me to decide on the size of pants - my hips and thighs have volume, compared to the rest of my body.  I can't wear leggings (jeggings) and skinnies without putting on a top that will cover up my hips.  So I've made up my mind not to force myself to wear something that doesn't fit my proportion, even if it's the trend.
I think my body will be happier in tapered or wide pants.

It reminds me of a special feature in the popular magazine VERY (a magazine targeting women in their 30s with kids) that was titled something like "I can't wear skinnies".
So of course I'm not the only one in their 30's who is feeling uncomfortable in something very tight.
It's a great thing if you can go on a diet or training program to tone your bod.  But if you are healthy and happy, why not be more positive about what you already have, and chose clothes that will make you look attractive?
Or do I just sound like I am making excuses?

The World of Hayao Miyazaki

I grew up watching anime movies by Hayao Miyazaki, "NAUSICAA of the valley of the wind" being my favorite.  As a child, I had wished that someday I can communicate with animals like her.
In high school, I wrote a 40 page report based on the comic version of the movie, after knowing the shocking fact that the movie was only the summery of book one and two out of the seven book series.  I remember how I loved writing out all of the serifs and how I tried to sound so analytic.

So it was a couple of days ago that I found one of his comic books "The Journey of Shuna" when I was browsing through Amazon.
I rented it at the local library.  I read it in about 30 minutes, but it took me to that deep Miyazki world again.  Unlike the beautiful watercolor pictures, the story was cruel, and made me think about it the whole day.
