中学からの同級生５人組の一人。
定期的に集まる会なのですが、今回は他の四人でサプライズ企画をしました。
メッセージ入りのデザートプレート。
そして「モーニングセット」というテーマで各自、新婚生活の朝ご飯にあったらいいなぁと思うものを揃えたのです。
私はランチョンマット担当。
以前彼女から受けていて保留になっていた依頼を実行する形となりました。
紫系がいいとうところまでは聞いていたのですが、いざ生地探しをしてみるとしっくりくるものがない、、、
頭の中でははっきりと描かれていたボタニカル模様のモダンな雰囲気。
ブックマークしてた生地ショップで見たものはどれもナチュラルテイスト過ぎたり、子供っぽかったり。
方向転換をして「北欧系」で検索してみるとマリメッコはじめ、デザイナーブランドを扱っているお店が出てきました。しかし、高い！
普段見慣れているメーター当たりの値段が10cm単位のものだったり。
そこで、予算内でイメージ通りのものを作るには自分でテキスタイルから作るしかない！という結論に至りました。
前からやってみたかったステンシルの本があったので、そこから図案を選び、ステンシルを作るところから。
生地を買うよりは時間はかかってしまいましたが、思い通りのものができ、そして何より楽しかった！
ここからはステンシルの作り方の詳細になります。
＜必要な道具＞
ランチョンマット用の生地
図案
クリアファイル
ペン型のカッターナイフ
油性ペン（先の細いもの）
マスキングテープ
アクリル絵具
化粧用のスポンジ
パレット（または紙皿など代用できるもの）
＜作り方＞
1. 図案を用意する（場合によっては拡大・縮小コピーで大きさを調整する）
2. クリアファイルを適当な大きさに切る
3. 油性ペンを使ってクリアファイルに図案を写す
4. カッターで切り抜く
5. マスキングテープでステンシルを布の上に固定する（２、３カ所）
6. アクリル絵の具をスポンジに良く染み込ませ、ステンシルの上からポンポンと叩くように繰り返し付けていく
＜ポイント＞
＊生地によって絵具の染み込み具合が違います。必ず切れ端で試してから始めて下さい。
＊洗濯すると色が薄くなります。それを踏まえた上で最初の濃さを決める。
＊図案の一部を使いたい時は周りの部分にマスキングテープを貼る。
＊ステンシルに絵具が固まってきたら、マスキングテープでペタペタやると取れます。
フリーザーペーパーステンシル（☆）に比べると、細かい切り抜きをするのは難しいです。
でもその分今回のような繰り返す模様には適していて、また別の作品にも使える点は便利。
そして手に入りやすい、お手頃なものでできるのがいいですね。
ランチョンマット自体は1cmの二つ折り、角を落として処理しています。
久しぶりになんちゃってブランドタグを挟んでみました。
このステンシル、かなり気に入ったので娘や自分用のTシャツも作ってみようと思っています。
TUTORIAL: Hand-stenciled Placemats
<What you'll need>
Fabric for your placemat
Stencil design
Clear file
Pen type cutter knife
Thin tip permanent marker
Washi tape
Acrylic paint
Makeup sponge
Palette (or anything you can use to spread out your paint on)
<How to stencil your fabric>
1. Prepare your stencil design
2. Cut the clear file into a size suitable for your design (make sure you have enough space around the design)
3. Use your permanent pen to copy the design onto your clear file
4. Cut out the design
5. Secure your stencil over the fabric using washi tape (2 or 3 places will be enough)
6. Let the sponge absorb some paint, then dab it over the stencil (try to fill in each hole with several dabs making the color darker each time)
<TIPS>
1. The paint will come out differently depending on your fabric. Always try out on scraps before you start.
2. The color will fade when washed. Keep that in mind when you decided the darkness of the color. However, if you put on too much paint, the fabric will become stiff.
3. If you want to use part of a design, use masking tape to cover up the surrounding designs.
4. The paint will start to clog up on your stencil. Use your masking tape to gently peel them off.
I'm sure there are more efficient gadgets out there to make stencils. But this is something you can do on a low budget, with things you can get at your local store, or they may already be lying around your house!
I've done Freezer Paper stenciling in the past as well. Compared to that, it is harder to cut out detailed designs since the clear file is thicker. But the advantage is that it is easier to use for repeated patterns like the one I did, and you can use them over and over again.
I just had so much fun with this project!
The flower and leaf design I used is so versatile, my mind kept drifting off to new ideas while I was working on it.
